Working From Home During COVID-19 | Staff & Employer Tips
Global Corporate companies are enforcing staff to work from home during the COVID-19 Pandemic, due to the large number of staff they have, whether it be a manufacturing company with thousands of staff on the floor, production lines, offices and going to see clients, the virus has spread at an alarming rate. Some of these companies have guides, processes and procedures in place for such circumstances, other’s do not.
Many staff are also now having to work from home for the first time, which can be a cause of concern for employers, as the “wheels” still need to turn whether you are working at your office desk, or the temporary home office space you have setup for what may be the next 3-4 weeks.
We have a created a few options and guidelines for both staff and employer to keep in mind during this time, and please remember, we are all in this together. The positive aspect is that we are all appreciating many things we have taken for granted in the past.
Facetime, WhatsApp, Video, Skype and Zoom are all Free Video Call App’s you can use to call people during times of loneliness in social distancing, self-isolation and working from home periods. Be aware of fake news articles, these can cause unnecessary panic and stress.
We do encourage everyone to take this time to self-reflect as well, look inward and use this time to makes the necessary changes. It is said that it takes “21 days to make or break a habit” COVID-19 is making people self-isolate, social distance & quarantine for the same amount of time, use it wisely, for yourself, colleagues, employers and your families.
The environment is also resetting itself, Mother Nature is taking the necessary time she needs to repair and heal, Pollution is down worldwide, climate change is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Many positive stories aren’t being reported, make the time to research the positive and uplifting stories from around the world.
There are more than you think, Italian’s serenading each other across apartment complex balconies; playing ping-pong with their next door neighbours out their window’s, dolphin’s and swans in the Venice canals. The world, countries and communities are uniting as one.

- Open Communication – This is your opportunity to prove your productivity levels in a time of panic to your employers and team members. They are putting a huge amount of trust in a large number staff, all at once, to continue working without supervision in the comfort of their own home remotely. How you handle yourself and your work load in this time is evidence to your Manager & Employer of possible future career prospects.
- Stick To Your Work Hours – This will help you keep to your routine as best as possible. If you haven’t yet, create a work group on WhatsApp where you can check in with colleagues, ask questions and clarify certain tasks if need be. You can still share your coffee breaks together, in a “virtual” way.
- Keep Your Spirits Up – Take Your breaks, coffee, lunch etc, try preparing meal you have been wanting to try at home but haven’t had the time. Try some Yoga, Stretching out your Neck & Shoulders or Cardio video’s on YouTube. Spend time with your kids, make it fun and educational where possible. Let them play, build forts & colour in together, change the blown lightbulbs, all the little things you don’t normally have time for, do a different task each day. Remember, limit yourself to an hour a day during work hours, and ensure you manage boundaries with family members in your work space and time.
- Management & Team Leaders – Be transparent with your team members. Not everyone is accustomed to working independently and remotely. Try video chat’s and feedback updates once or twice a day, and let your staff know they can contact you privately if need be. It’s a difficult time for everyone, and they are looking to you for guidance, be there cheerleader.
- Be Mindful – Of your health and those around you. Stay indoors, keep everything clean and sanitized. Lemon Juice, Vinegar and Salt are natural at home products and antiseptics you can use should you or your family feel ill. Keep warm, drink lots of fluids, soups, teas etc.
By staying indoors we are limiting the spread of the virus. If we all look after ourselves and do our part, we will beat this together, united as a nation that is so often divided.
